Thank You

Oh my goodness, you guys! Thank you all so much for all your support and encouragement. I am overwhelmed and heartened by all your love and kind words.

I actually left the house without a head covering today. Granted, it was just to take Blake to football practice so it wasn't truly out in public. But still, it felt pretty great.

I have been thinking so much about how I feel about being bald and about how other people feel about me being bald that I kind of forgot about Karly, Blake and Matthew's reactions to it. Blake told me today on the way to football practice that he might feel a little embarrassed if I decide to go out of the house without a scarf on. In all my angst and torment about this, I never thought about what it might be like to be a 13 year old boy with a bald mom. Probably not the greatest position to be in! He and I will have to discuss this a little more so that I can determine how he's really feeling about all of it, but in the meantime I have to keep that in mind.

Good for Blake for sharing his concerns. It says a lot about him and about you, too. But please, remember that the best possible lesson you could hand over is one that says: yeah, people whom you love sometimes look different, and it's okay to feel sad and ultimately happy about that.

I speak to a woman who knows all this, I'm sure. You're a great mom, Kim. Just totally admirable.

Kim: Like I told you the other day- on your worst day (and I know you've had a few lately!), you look better than most people do on their BEST day! You look amazing- you can't help it! Keep your head up high!

I think you look absolutely beautiful. I know we're not always going to feel that way but neither do women with hair. I've had good and bad days both with hair and now that mine is thinning like crazy and bringing me closer to a wig everyday. It's all about how you feel, and when you still feel beautiful the rest of the world sees you that way too. When I first started to lose hair a good friend of mine said "It's all about the earrings!" Buy the most fabulous pair you can lay your hands on and wear them proudly. We are so much more than our hair. Keep that beautiful smile alive.

Oh, to be 13 again (thank god, we're not), the concerns are so seemingly superficial. I respect you so for respecting and listening to him.
